Applying for Inpatient Medical Coder
Job Summary
The Inpatient Medical Coder is responsible for reviewing and accurately coding inpatient medical records using ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes. This role ensures compliance with official coding guidelines and accurate DRG assignment.
Key Responsibilities
- Thoroughly review entire inpatient charts including discharge summaries, operative notes, physician orders, and progress notes.
- Analyse inpatient medical records to assign appropriate diagnosis and procedure codes. Assign accurate ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes.
- Ensure accurate DRG assignment and validate coding for severity of illness and risk of mortality.
- Collaborate with clinical documentation improvement teams to clarify documentation discrepancies.
- Maintain coding accuracy and productivity standards as defined by the organization.
- Stay updated with the latest coding guidelines and regulatory changes.
- Update case logs, audit outcomes, and productivity records regularly in coding tools like 3M, EPIC, or TruCode.
Eligibility Criteria
- Education – Must a have bachelor’s degree
- Certification – Should be either AAPC or AHIMA certification.
- Experience: Minimum 1-3 years of experience required.
- Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
